Simplicity Linux 12.7 Netbook Beta Is Here!
This is Simplicity Linux 12.7 Netbook Beta. We’ve made a few changes…
The biggest change we’ve made is that no longer does Netbook have links to folders of web applications. Instead we have used Cairo Dock and put applications on there for you to use. Instant messaging is handled by Pidgin. We’re going to include a few tutorials on this blog for setting up Pidgin for Facebook because it can be done, it’s just a pain. We also bundled a link to Dropbox, because the app is too heavy for Netbook, and the site is just as good as the app in our view. Social media is covered by Twitter, Facebook and Google+. There is a new style control panel which we actually like and think is a bit more intuitive than the Windows control panel (I speak from recent experience!) We also have a Google button for people who want to just get straight to Google – i.e.: Linux newcomers. Plus you can now access your clipboard history – a first for Simplicity Linux out of the box. You can also access music via the epic Grooveshark. We also have a new look CPU monitor, volume control, and you can control the luminosity of your monitor. But one app we really like – weather on the dock. Trust us, it’s really handy.
You can download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/simplicitylinux/files/12.7Betas/SimplicityLinuxNetbook12.7Beta.iso/download
And look out for a special competition coming later today just for Linux newbies.

Hey,
I have been trying to settle on a linux distribution for a while now. I have been using ubunto on my netbook for about 6 months but i wanted something slicker that i could carry around with me and primarily use to run eclipse and do android dev.
I had hopped-around slitaz, puppy and lubunto and then I stumbled across this puplet beta and so far I love it. It has a great mix of eye candy and speed.
. I also think you have been really smart with your choice of packages, i always thought other puppies had too much! At the moment i am comparing it to your netbook release edition and Minjpup. The beta is my favorite so far but I do like the way the release edition-application menu puts things into categories better. They both wipe the floor with minjpup IMHO
I was wondering if there is somewhere suggestions and bugs found? There is currently two bugs that are bothering me and three appearence choices:
Bugs:
-When i install a new application it does not show up in the cairo dock application menu (but it does show up in the application menu above)
-Cannot find the correct module for my wireless
-Cairo dock died at one point and i couldnt work out how to restore it
I keep using autoprobe and its getting no-where, i think this may actually be because the wireless is “off” but i have no idea how to turn it on (emachine E350), i have solved this problem on puppy before but can’t remember how. When i find the solution i will document it and might have a go at writing a script or something to help future users
Appearence tidbits:
-The dock is dark but the top bar is light, i feel they should match
-Dont like the massive mouse cursor :p
-Not a fan of the tree trunk, I think it ruins the polished feel. Go with something simpler, possibly your own logo or the XFCE default
-personally i think a touch of opacity and shadow backdrop with XFCE really boosts the eye candy feel that windows refugees miss, I think this should be something that can be turned on/off in the first script, (I really like the way slitaz has it in the right click -> desktop option)
Other points:
-the media edition doesnt seem to work with YUMI wereas both netbook editions do
-I really like the idea of a “browser” edition, is this in the works? something i could put next to the netbook version via YUMI. the puplet BrowserLinux didnt work for me.
p.s. personally i went with this background which i thought went really well with the feel, but thats just me :p
p.p.s I love your windows refugee edition that is really a good idea! I have been trying to wean my fiancee onto linux, so far she can cope with Linux Mint (the application menu is very windows-like) but she can’t get over the fact she can’t play sims….i am trying to set up PlayOnLinux to see if i can overcome that.
Great feedback Christopher. Some of the visual things you mention are going to be fixed in the release edition. Cairo dock doesn’t automatically add newly installed applications, but if you make a shortcut on the desktop, you can drag it to Cairo. Also, we’re thinking of relaunching our extremely cut down release called Obsidian which is just a network manager and a browser.
As far as I am aware, The Sims doesn’t work too well on Linux but I believe The Sims 3 does.
“but if you make a shortcut on the desktop, you can drag it to Cairo”
That would add it to the dock, whats strange is if you access the applications menu, from the dock (the one that should be the same as the “main” button) it doesn’t get updated with newly installed applications until you re-start X. After which you can go dock->applications menu->graphics->gimp.
Obsian sounds good, i think it would be a good touch to have it boot and have it come up with the browser on the google home page, although i imagine this is what ChromeOS already does.
Cool
. I actually had a few people walk past today and say “ur OS looks nice, what is it, a mac?” which made me chuckle :p.
lol, I like that people confused Simplicity with Mac OS! As for the apps in the dock, it doesn’t need a restart of X, but it does sometimes take a while for an app to find it’s way to the dock’s start menu. I had this this morning whilst using OpenShot and XCapVid, they didn’t appear in the menu until I ran XCapVid, then they both appeared.
